Time and Eternity – What is eternity in a universe with an end? For everything there is a time, and every thing under heaven has its hour – says Ecclesiastes 3:1. See the series here ⌚5 min.

Time is not just what the clock shows – it is a flexible fabric of the universe.
„Time is how God made it so that everything doesn't happen at once.”
(Attributed to Albert Einstein)
Time – a line or an illusion?
We perceive time as a succession of moments: past ⫸ present ⫸ future.
But physics says otherwise:
- In relativity, time is not absolute. It dilates or contracts depending on motion and gravity.
- In quantum mechanics, some processes are atemporal — they have no clear direction of time.
- In thermodynamics, the sense of time is defined by the increase of entropy (disorder).
Time and Eternity: Time does not flow.
Time is — like a map that our consciousness traverses, point by point.
God is not in time. Time is in God.
The Bible does not speak of God as a being who „waits” or „hurries”.
„For the Lord, a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like a day.” (2 Peter 3:8)
This is not a poetic metaphor, but an ontological statement (adjective related to ontology, the study of being and existence):
God is in an atemporal state. He does not „experience” time, but encompasses everything simultaneously.
„I am Who I am.” (Exodus 3:14)
This is not a grammatical statement. It is a description of pure presence, beyond any succession.
Entropy* and end – time has direction because the world falls
- In physics, entropy is what defines the sense of time.
In other words: time flows because things degrade.
The Bible speaks of sin as disorder, as breaking of origin, as a „fall”.
The fall introduces death, and death is irreversibility – precisely the entropic sense of time.
„The earth is full of violence and crookedness…” (Isaiah 24:5-6)
*🔬 Entropy is a fascinating concept that appears in several fields, each with its own nuances:
📘 In physics (thermodynamics)
- Entropy is a state quantity that measures the degree of disorder or randomness in a physical system.
- According to the second law of thermodynamics, the entropy of an isolated system tends to increase over time. Which means that natural processes lead to a state of greater disorder.
🧠 In information theory
- Entropy expresses the degree of uncertainty of a message or a source of information.
- The more unpredictable a message is, the higher the entropy is. It is used to measure the efficiency of data transmission.
🎨 In art and philosophy
- Sometimes we talk about „aesthetic entropy” – a state of creative disorder from which a work of art can emerge.
- In a metaphorical sense, entropy can describe the tendency towards chaos in society, relationships, or even in personal life.
🔁 Simple examples
- A gas spreading in a room → high entropy.
- A well-organized room → low entropy.
- An encrypted message, hard to anticipate → high informational entropy.
Quantum reversibility and the paradox of time
In quantum physics, the fundamental equations are reversible. They do not indicate a specific direction of time.
Quantum systems can evolve in both directions, and some experiments suggest that the future can influence the past.
- see the experiments with delayed alegere quantum eraser.
What if time does not flow only forward, but is a network of simultaneous connections?
What if prayer does not change only the future, but reorders reality at any point?
Thus, what the Bible calls a miracle, physics might describe as a reconfiguring the probability in the network.
„I change the times and the hours…” (Daniel 2:21)
Eternity – is not infinite time. It is timelessness.
When the Bible speaks about „eternity”, it doesn't say that time goes to infinity.
Eternity is a different ontological state:
- There is no succession, but simultaneous presence.
There is no „tomorrow” or „yesterday”. Only „I am”.
„I am Alpha and Omega, says the Lord God, The One who is, The One who was and The One who is to come, the All-Mighty.” (Apocalypse 1:8)
„Time will be no more.” (Apocalypse 10:6)
Eternity is not an extended line. It is the center from which all lines start and return.
Christ – the intersection of time with eternity
In Christ, something unique happens: eternity enters time*.
A God beyond time becomes human, lives moments, suffers, dies — and rises.
*Eternity, which for us is „beyond” time, takes on human flesh and is measured in years, months, moments…
„When the fullness of time, came” (, God sent His Son…” 4:4)
Galatians Fullness does not mean chronology, but*.
density of meaning„ (> "The time has been fulfilled and the kingdom of God has approached." 1:15)
Mark *"Fullness" does not refer only to time as a succession of minutes, but to the maturation of all conditions – a time full of meaning, in which the past, present, and future converge to make room for the supreme event:.
the coming of Christ.
In Christ, time is healed.
Death is defeated.
The irreversible becomes reversible.
Time is not just what the clock shows, but a framework in which we grow and choose. In Christ, the irreversible becomes reversible, and time gains meaning.
Inner time – how do you measure the soul? in a totally different way:
- Sometimes, an hour seems a day.
- At other times, ten years pass like a moment.
The Psalms describe this reality:
„Man is like grass, his days like the flowers of the field; he will bloom.” (Psalm 102:15)
„. For our life passes and we will go.” (Psalm 89:12)
The time of the soul is the measure of the intensity of experience, not of the clock.
Conclusion:
- Time is a temporary framework for an eternal work
- Our universe has a beginning and an end. But in it works a will that has no beginning and no end.
- If time flows, it is so that something can grow.
- If everything dies, it is so that true life can be sought.
Time is not an enemy. It is a window of choice.
After that, we enter again outside of it – where the sound no longer fades and the light no longer weakens.
Time is not just what the clock shows, but a framework in which we grow and choose.
